Certainly cost and location must be considered when making a decision, but there are additional important factors also. Such as, if the ultrasound technician schools have earned accreditation or if they provide internships. These and other qualifications will be discussed more in depth later in this article. But to start with, let’s discuss what a sonogram tech does and the degrees and online education programs that are available.

Columbiana AL sonographer testing pregnant womanThere are several professional titles for ultrasound techs (technicians). They are also called sonogram techs, diagnostic medical sonographers (or just sonographers) and ultrasound technologists. Regardless of name, they all have the same basic job function, which is to perform diagnostic ultrasound procedures on patients. Although many practice as generalists there are specialties within the profession, for instance in cardiology and pediatrics. The majority practice in Columbiana AL clinics, hospitals, outpatient diagnostic imaging centers and even private practices. Standard daily work tasks of a sonogram technician may include:

  • Keeping records of patient medical histories and specifics of each procedure
  • Counseling patients by explaining the procedures and answering questions
  • Readying the ultrasound machines for usage and then cleaning and re-calibrating them
  • Transferring patients to treatment rooms and making them comfortable
  • Operating equipment while limiting patient exposure to sound waves
  • Reviewing the results and identifying need for supplemental testing

Ultrasound techs must frequently gauge the performance and safety of their machines. They also must adhere to a high professional standard and code of conduct as medical practitioners. In order to sustain that degree of professionalism and remain up to date with medical knowledge, they are mandated to complete continuing education training on a regular basis.

Sonogram Technician Degrees Offered

Columbiana AL ultrasound tech testing pregnant womanUltrasound tech students have the opportunity to earn either an Associate or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree will typically take around 18 months to 2 years to finish depending on the course load and program. A Bachelor’s Degree will require more time at up to 4 years to finalize. Another option for individuals who have previously obtained a college degree is a post graduate certificate program. If you have received a Bachelor’s Degree in any major or an Associate Degree in a relevant health sector, you can enroll in a certificate program that will take just 12 to 18 months to complete. One thing to keep in mind is that the majority of ultrasound technician programs do have a clinical training component as part of their course of study. It can often be fulfilled by participating in an internship program which numerous colleges organize with Columbiana AL clinics and hospitals. Once you have graduated from one of the degree or certificate programs, you will then need to comply with the licensing or certification prerequisites in Alabama or whichever state you elect to work in.

Online Sonographer Classes

woman attending online sonography school in Columbiana ALAs previously mentioned, nearly all sonogram technician schools have a clinical requirement to their programs. So although you can receive a certificate or degree online, a substantial portion of the training will be either carried out in an on-campus laboratory or at an approved off-campus facility. Clinical training can typically be satisfied by means of an internship at a local Columbiana AL outpatient clinic, hospital or private practice. But the rest of the training and classes may be attended online in your Columbiana home. This is particularly convenient for those students that continue working while earning their degrees. In addition online schools are frequently more affordable than traditional alternatives. Costs for study materials and commuting can be lessened as well. But just as with every sonography school you are reviewing, make sure that the online program you ultimately pick is accredited. Among the most highly respected accrediting agencies is the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Accreditation is particularly significant for licensing, certification and finding employment (more on accreditation later). So if you are motivated enough to attend classes away from the classroom in the convenience of your own home, then online classes could be the ideal choice for you.

Topics to Ask Sonography Colleges

Questions to ask Columbiana AL ultrasound tech schoolsAs soon as you have decided on which certificate or degree that you would like to obtain, you can initiate the procedure of evaluating and comparing ultrasound tech schools. You may first want to decide whether you would rather attend classes online or travel to a school campus in the Columbiana AL area. Of course location will be critical if you choose the latter, and the price of tuition no doubt will be an important qualification also. But there are other variables that you must also take into account, for instance if the schools are accredited and if they provide internship programs. So in order to carry out your due diligence so that you can make your final selection, following are several questions that you need ask each sonography school prior to making a decision.

Are the Ultrasound Technician Colleges Accredited? A large number of ultrasound technician colleges have obtained some type of accreditation, whether regional or national. Even so, it’s still important to make sure that the program and school are accredited. Among the most highly respected accrediting organizations in the field of sonography is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). Programs receiving accreditation from the JRC-DMS have gone through an extensive assessment of their instructors and educational materials. If the college is online it may also receive accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which focuses on online or distance learning. All accrediting agencies should be acknowledged by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. Along with ensuring a quality education, accreditation will also assist in obtaining financial aid and student loans, which are frequently not accessible for non-accredited colleges. Accreditation may also be a pre-requisite for certification and licensing as required. And numerous Columbiana AL health facilities will only hire a graduate of an accredited school for entry level jobs.

Are Internship Programs Sponsored? Inquire if the sonogram tech programs you are evaluating have associations with Columbiana AL clinics or hospitals for internship programs. Internships are not only a terrific manner to get hands on training in a clinical setting, they are also a means to satisfy the practical training requirement for the majority of programs. As a secondary benefit, they can help graduates and students establish professional relationships in the Columbiana medical community and help with obtaining employment.

Is Job Placement Assistance available? You will probably wish to hit the ground running after graduation, but getting that initial job in a new field can be difficult without assistance. Find out if the sonographer schools you are interviewing have job placement programs and what their success rates are. High and rapid placement rates are an excellent sign that the schools have substantial networks and good relationships with Alabama healthcare employers. It also corroborates that their students are well regarded and in demand.

Where is the School Located? For a number of students, the school they decide on will have to be within commuting distance of their Columbiana AL residence. Students who have decided to attend online classes obviously will not have to trouble themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of local internships will be of importance. One thing to bear in mind is that if you choose to enroll in a school that is out of state or even out of your local area, you might be required to pay a higher tuition. State colleges commonly charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges generally charge a higher tuition for those students that don’t reside within their districts.

How Large are the Classes ? Unless you are the type of student that likes to sit far in the rear of class or get lost in the crowd, you will probably prefer a smaller class size. Smaller classes enable more individual participation and one-on-one instruction. Ask the colleges you are reviewing what the average student to teacher ratio is for their classes. If practical you may want to sit in on one or more classes before making your final determination. This will also give you an opportunity to converse with some of the students and instructors to get their opinions regarding the sonogram tech program as well.

Can the College Accommodate your Schedule? And last you need to verify that the ultrasound tech  school you ultimately choose can provide the class schedule you need. This is especially crucial if you opt to continue working while attending classes. If you must schedule evening or weekend classes in the Columbiana AL area, verify that they are available. If you can only attend part-time, verify if that is an option and how many courses or credit hours you would have to enroll in. Also, ask what the protocol is for making up any classes that you might miss due to work, illness or family obligations.

Enrolling in an Ultrasound Tech Program near Columbiana AL?

If you are considering a Sonography Tech School near Columbiana Alabama, following is some interesting background information about the location of your new school campus.

Columbiana, Alabama

Columbiana, originally called Columbia, was selected as the county seat of Shelby County in 1826 over rivals Calera and Montevallo. After the selection as the county seat, Columbiana celebrated by drilling holes in a large pine tree and packing it with gunpowder. The tree was blown up and the sound could be heard for miles. Later in 1826, the courthouse was moved to an old school building in Columbiana.

An act of the Alabama Legislature officially changed the name of Shelby County's county seat to Columbiana on January 13, 1832. Columbiana was incorporated on December 5, 1837 with corporate limits one-quarter of a mile in each direction from the public square.

In 1854, the decision was made to build a larger courthouse at the south end of “Silk Stocking Road”, now Main Street. From 1854 to 1908 several additions and changes were made to the courthouse. During the American Civil War, Columbiana was connected to the nearby town of Shelby by the Shelby Iron Company Railroad, which connected the Shelby Iron Works to the Alabama and Tennessee River Railroad. The Iron Works supplied iron to the C.B. Churchill and Company foundry, which moved to Columbiana in 1862 after the fall of Corinth, Mississippi. The Churchill foundry made eight and ten pound shot, eight and ten pound shells, and shells for Blakely rifles.[4] The C.B. Churchill and Company foundry, Shelby Iron Works and the railroad were destroyed by Union forces on March 31, 1865, as part of Wilson's Raid.

Moving the courthouse to Columbiana was not necessarily popular in 1826 and there have been numerous attempts to relocate the county seat over the years. In 1901, the Alabama Constitutional Convention addressed the issue by including Section 41 in the new state constitution. Section 41 prohibited a move of the Shelby County seat from Columbiana unless a vote of the people was held, the only county in Alabama with such a designation.
