But first, let’s discuss what a sonogram tech does and the degrees and online training programs that are available.

They are also referred to as sonogram techs, diagnostic medical sonographers (or just sonographers) and ultrasound technologists. No matter what their title is, they all have the same basic job description, which is to perform diagnostic ultrasound testing on patients. Although a number of techs practice as generalists there are specializations within the profession, for example in pediatrics and cardiology. • Preparing the ultrasound machines for testing and then sterilizing and re-calibrating them
  • Transferring patients to treatment rooms and ensuring their comfort

  • Assessing results and identifying need for additional testing

Sonographers must frequently gauge the safety and performance of their equipment. They also must adhere to a high ethical standard and code of conduct as health practitioners. So as to sustain that level of professionalism and remain current with medical knowledge, they are required to complete continuing education training on a regular basis.

Sonogram Tech Degrees Available

Longboat Key FL ultrasound tech testing pregnant womanUltrasound tech students have the option to acquire either an Associate or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree will generally take around 18 months to 2 years to finish dependent on the program and class load. A Bachelor’s Degree will take longer at up to four years to finish. Another option for those who have already earned a college degree is a post graduate certificate program. If you have received a Bachelor’s Degree in any major or an Associate Degree in a related medical sector, you can instead choose a certificate program that will require only 12 to 18 months to finish. Something to consider is that most ultrasound technician schools do have a practical training element as a portion of their curriculum. It often may be satisfied by taking part in an internship program which many colleges organize with Longboat Key FL hospitals and clinics. Once you have graduated from any of the degree or certificate programs, you will then need to comply with the certification or licensing requirements in Florida or whatever state you choose to work in.

Online Sonogram Tech Degrees

woman attending online sonography school in Longboat Key FLAs previously mentioned, nearly all ultrasound tech colleges have a clinical component to their programs. So although you can receive a degree or certificate online, a significant part of the training will be either held in an on campus lab or at an authorized off-campus medical care provider. Clinical training can often be satisfied by means of an internship at a local Longboat Key FL outpatient clinic, hospital or private practice. But the rest of the classes and training can be attended online in your Longboat Key home. This is especially convenient for those individuals that continue working while earning their degrees. Plus online colleges are often more affordable than on-campus options. Expenditures for commuting and study materials can be reduced as well. But just as with any ultrasound tech college you are reviewing, make sure that the online program you ultimately pick is accredited. One of the most highly regarded accrediting organizations is the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Accreditation is especially significant for certification, licensing and job placement (more on accreditation later). So if you are dedicated enough to attend classes outside of the classroom in the comfort of your own home, then an online degree may be the ideal option for you.

Questions to Ask Sonogram Tech Programs

Questions to ask Longboat Key FL ultrasound tech schoolsOnce you have decided on the type of degree or certificate that you would like to obtain, you can begin the procedure of evaluating and comparing sonogram technician schools. You will first probably want to decide whether you will attend classes online or travel to a college campus in the Longboat Key FL area. Obviously location will be important if you choose the latter, and the price of tuition undoubtedly will be an important qualification as well. But there are additional factors that you should also take into account, such as if the colleges are accredited and if they sponsor internship programs. Therefore in order to carry out your due diligence so that you can make your final selection, below are several questions that you need ask each ultrasound tech college before deciding.

Are the Ultrasound Technician Programs Accredited? The majority of sonogram technician colleges have acquired some type of accreditation, whether regional or national. Even so, it’s still crucial to verify that the program and school are accredited. One of the most highly regarded accrediting organizations in the field of sonography is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). Programs obtaining accreditation from the JRC-DMS have gone through an extensive assessment of their teachers and educational materials. If the school is online it may also earn accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which focuses on distance or online learning. All accrediting agencies should be recognized by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. Besides guaranteeing a superior education, accreditation will also assist in securing financial assistance and student loans, which are frequently not accessible for non-accredited colleges. Accreditation may also be a pre-requisite for certification and licensing as required. And many Longboat Key FL health facilities will only hire a graduate of an accredited program for entry-level positions.

Are Internship Programs Offered? Ask if the sonogram tech colleges you are assessing have relationships with Longboat Key FL hospitals or clinics for internship programs. Internships are not only an excellent means to obtain hands on training in a clinical setting, they are additionally a means to fulfill the practical training requirement for the majority of programs. As a supplemental benefit, they can help graduates and students develop professional connections in the Longboat Key health care community and assist with job placement.

Is Job Placement Help available? You will probably want to hit the ground running after graduation, but finding that initial job in a new profession can be difficult without assistance. Ask if the sonographer programs you are reviewing have job placement programs and what their success rates are. High and rapid placement rates are an excellent indication that the schools have sizable networks and good relationships with Florida healthcare employers. It also corroborates that their graduates are well regarded and in demand.

Where is the School Located? For many students, the school they pick will have to be within commuting distance of their Longboat Key FL home. Students who have chosen to attend online classes naturally will not have to trouble themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of area internships will be of concern. One thing to consider is that if you choose to enroll in a college that is out of state or even out of your local area, you might have to pay a higher tuition. State colleges typically charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges generally charge a higher tuition to those students that live outside of their districts.

How Large are the Classes ? Unless you are the type of student that likes to sit far in the rear of the classroom or get lost in the crowd, you will likely want a smaller class size. Small classes allow for more individual participation and one-on-one instruction. Ask the colleges you are reviewing what the average teacher to student ratio is for their classes. If practical you may want to sit in on one or more classes before making your ultimate determination. This will also give you an opportunity to converse with a few of the students and instructors to get their perspectives regarding the sonogram technician program as well.

Can the College Accommodate your Schedule? And last you need to verify that the ultrasound tech  program you ultimately select can offer the class schedule you need. This is especially essential if you decide to continue working while you attend school. If you must schedule evening or weekend classes in the Longboat Key FL area, make certain that they are offered. If you can only enroll on a part-time basis, find out if that is an option and how many credit hours or courses you would need to enroll in. Also, find out what the protocol is for making up any classes that you might miss as a result of illness, work or family obligations.

Longboat Key is a town in Manatee and Sarasota counties along the central west coast of the U.S. state of Florida, located on and coterminous with the barrier island of the same name. Longboat Key is south of Anna Maria Island, between Sarasota Bay and the Gulf of Mexico. It is almost equally divided between Manatee and Sarasota counties. The town of Longboat Key was incorporated in 1955 and is part of the Bradenton–Sarasota–Venice Metropolitan Statistical Area. The town's population was 6,888 at the 2010 census,[5] down from 7,603 at the 2000 census.

Longboat Key was originally inhabited by Native Americans. The area what is now Longboat Key was scouted by Juan de Añasco who was the first known European to explore the key and Hernando De Soto's scout. He spent about 2 months attempting to find a landing site, he was also most likely the first man to see and explore Sarasota Bay, Boca Ceiga Bay and the Manatee River.[6] According to local legend he believed the Indians were hostile and when they reached land on the island and fled leaving their Longboat in a bayou. Pirate Jean Lafitte was said to have been shipwrecked near or on Longboat Key.[7] For the next 304 years it was ignored.

It has been known that there were Cuban and Spanish fisherman along with squatters had made a camp and made a trading post on the northern part of the island before 1842. At the time the area was referred to on maps as "Saraxola" and "Zarazote". There is little know about the island after 1848. It has been known though that an early settler of Sarasota and its first post master, Charles Abbe had a plantation for citrus and pineapples on an unknown location on the island.[6]

In the late 19th-century, Longboat Key was opened up for settlement. Longboat Key had appeared to be two people named Colin and Rowlin W Witt in 1882 and claimed 7.15 acres (2.89 ha) on the north end of the island. Thomas Mann, its most notable settler had purchased land and moved to it with he and his sons in 1884 receiving 144.5 acres (58 ha) on the key.[6] in which he moved to in 1888 with his family and his house was located in the north end of the key.[8] A year after buying the land the town was given a name and was known as Longbeach. With a passage being dug in 1895 from Sarasota Bay to Tampa Bay steamships and Paddle boats could access the island. Soon, a mail service was established that brought residents mail that sent mail from Cortez. The land was sold in 1905 for $500 for commercial development. In the early 1900s Longboat Key was a farming community until 1921. Longboat Key was very popular mostly for growing fruits and tomatoes with Bryon Corey owning a farm which was on the New Pass on the southernmost point of the key. In 1912 The Sarasota Times said on its headline: "From a lonely Key, it is now a center of trucking and fruit growing."
