Evergreen Park IL ultrasound technician with patientNow that you have made a decision to pursue an ultrasound technician degree near Evergreen Park IL, it’s time to begin the procedure of selecting a school. First, you have to find the ideal program that will furnish the proper training to become a skilled professional. And since a number of states do mandate that ultrasound techs be either licensed or certified, depending on your residence you may also need preparation to pass a certification or licensing exam. So it’s extremely important that you research each program in order to evaluate and compare your options. But just where does one start? A number of prospective students will start by looking for schools that are within commuting distance of their homes and then by comparing tuition. Of course location and cost need to be taken into account when making a decision, but there are other significant factors as well. For example, if the ultrasound technician schools are accredited or if they offer internships. These and other qualifiers will be covered more in detail later in this post. But to start with, let’s review what an ultrasound tech does and the degrees and online education programs that are offered.

Ultrasound Technician Job Summary

Evergreen Park IL sonographer testing pregnant womanThere are multiple professional titles for ultrasound techs (technicians). They are also referred to as ultrasound technologists, sonogram techs, and diagnostic medical sonographers (or just sonographers). No matter what their title is, they all have the same basic job function, which is to implement diagnostic ultrasound procedures on patients. While a number of techs work as generalists there are specializations within the field, for example in pediatrics and cardiology. Most work in Evergreen Park IL clinics, hospitals, outpatient diagnostic imaging centers and even private practices. Typical daily job functions of an ultrasound tech may involve:

  • Maintaining records of patient medical histories and details of each procedure
  • Counseling patients by explaining the procedures and answering questions
  • Readying the ultrasound machines for testing and then sterilizing and recalibrating them
  • Moving patients to treatment rooms and ensuring their comfort
  • Operating equipment while minimizing patient exposure to sound waves
  • Evaluating results and determining need for additional testing

Ultrasound techs must routinely assess the performance and safety of their equipment. They also are held to a high professional standard and code of conduct as medical practitioners. So as to maintain that level of professionalism and remain current with medical knowledge, they are mandated to complete continuing education courses on a regular basis.

Sonogram Tech Degrees Available

Evergreen Park IL ultrasound tech testing pregnant womanUltrasound technician students have the opportunity to earn either an Associate Degree or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree will typically require about 18 months to 2 years to finish based upon the program and class load. A Bachelor’s Degree will take longer at up to 4 years to finalize. Another alternative for those who have already obtained a college degree is a post graduate certificate program. If you have obtained a Bachelor’s Degree in any major or an Associate Degree in a related medical field, you can instead choose a certificate program that will require only 12 to 18 months to finish. Something to consider is that the majority of ultrasound technician schools do have a practical training component as part of their course of study. It often may be satisfied by taking part in an internship program which many colleges organize through Evergreen Park IL hospitals and clinics. After you have graduated from one of the degree or certificate programs, you will then need to comply with the certification or licensing prerequisites in Illinois or whatever state you elect to work in.

Online Ultrasound Tech Programs

woman attending online sonography school in Evergreen Park ILAs aforementioned, almost all sonogram technician colleges have a practical requirement to their programs. So although you can earn a degree or certificate online, a significant part of the training will be either held in an on campus lab or at an approved off-campus facility. Clinical training can usually be fulfilled by means of an internship at a local Evergreen Park IL hospital, outpatient clinic or private practice. But the rest of the training and classes can be attended online in your Evergreen Park home. This is especially beneficial for those individuals that continue working while earning their degrees. In addition online programs are many times less expensive than on-campus alternatives. Expenses for study materials and commuting may be decreased as well. But similarly as with every ultrasound tech college you are considering, verify that the online school you select is accredited. One of the most highly regarded accrediting organizations is the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Accreditation is particularly crucial for certification, licensing and finding employment (more on accreditation later). So if you are dedicated enough to learn outside of the classroom in the convenience of your own home, then online classes may be the ideal choice for you.

Subjects to Ask Sonography Schools

Questions to ask Evergreen Park IL ultrasound tech schoolsWhen you have decided on which degree or certificate that you would like to obtain, you can initiate the process of evaluating and comparing sonogram tech colleges. You may first want to choose whether you would rather attend classes online or commute to a school campus in the Evergreen Park IL area. Obviously location will be important if you decide on the latter, and the price of tuition no doubt will be an initial qualifier also. But there are additional variables that you must also take into consideration, for example if the colleges are accredited and if they sponsor internship programs. Therefore in order to complete your due diligence so that you can arrive at your final selection, below are several questions that you need ask each sonography school prior to making a decision.

Are the Ultrasound Technician Colleges Accredited? Most ultrasound tech colleges have obtained some type of accreditation, whether regional or national. Nevertheless, it’s still important to confirm that the program and school are accredited. Among the most highly regarded accrediting organizations in the field of sonography is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). Schools earning accreditation from the JRC-DMS have gone through an extensive review of their instructors and course materials. If the school is online it can also receive accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which focuses on distance or online learning. All accrediting agencies should be recognized by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. Along with ensuring a quality education, accreditation will also help in securing financial aid and student loans, which are often not offered for non-accredited programs. Accreditation might also be a pre-requisite for licensing and certification as required. And a number of Evergreen Park IL health facilities will only hire graduates of an accredited school for entry-level positions.

Are Internships Provided? Ask if the ultrasound technician schools you are assessing have associations with Evergreen Park IL hospitals or clinics for internship programs. Internships are not only an excellent way to get hands on experience in a clinical environment, they are also a means to fulfill the practical training requirement for the majority of programs. As a secondary benefit, they can assist graduates and students develop professional connections in the Evergreen Park healthcare community and assist with obtaining employment.

Is Job Placement Assistance provided? You will most likely wish to secure employment quickly after graduating, but finding that first job in a new profession can be challenging without help. Find out if the ultrasound tech schools you are reviewing have job placement programs and what their placement rates are. High and rapid placement rates are a good sign that the schools have large networks and great relationships with Illinois healthcare employers. It also substantiates that their students are well regarded and sought after.

Where is the Program Located? For a number of students, the school they pick will need to be within travelling distance of their Evergreen Park IL residence. Those who have decided to attend classes online obviously will not have to concern themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of area internships will be of concern. One thing to bear in mind is that if you choose to enroll in a program that is out of state or perhaps out of your local area, you may need to pay a higher tuition. State colleges usually charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges often charge a higher tuition for those students that don’t reside within their districts.

What Size are the Classes ? Unless you are the kind of student that likes to sit far in the back of the classroom or get lost in the crowd, you will likely prefer a small class size. Small classes permit more individual participation and one-on-one instruction. Ask the colleges you are researching what the average student to teacher ratio is for their classes. If practical you may prefer to monitor one or more classes before making your ultimate decision. This will also give you a chance to speak with some of the instructors and students to get their perspectives regarding the ultrasound tech program also.

Can the College Accommodate your Schedule? And finally you need to confirm that the ultrasound tech  school you ultimately pick can offer the class schedule you need. This is especially essential if you choose to continue working while attending school. If you need to schedule night or weekend classes in the Evergreen Park IL area, make sure that they are offered. If you can only enroll on a part-time basis, verify if that is an alternative and how many credit hours or courses you would have to enroll in. Also, learn what the protocol is for making up any classes that you might miss due to illness, work or family obligations.

Enrolling in an Ultrasound Tech Program near Evergreen Park IL?

If you are considering a Sonography Tech School near Evergreen Park Illinois, following is some interesting background information about the location of your new school campus.

Evergreen Park, Illinois

As early as 1828, a German farming family had settled in the area of what is now Evergreen Park. In the succeeding decades, other German immigrants arrived. Kedzie Avenue and 95th Street crisscrossed the farmland and provided access to markets.

The first railroad (now the Grand Trunk Railroad) came through the area in 1873. In 1875, the community built its first school just west of 95th and Kedzie. The school and the stores that began to cluster around this intersection defined the community's main business area. Nearby, a real-estate developer, with a vision of the Arc de Triomphe area of Paris, laid out a star-shaped park with eight streets radiating from it. The evergreen trees planted in the park inspired the village's name. The location and layout of the park was intended to be the center of town, but 95th St and Kedzie Ave. later proved a more accurate midpoint. After the death of Mayor Henry Klein shortly after the village's 75th anniversary, the park was renamed Klein Park in his honor. [4]

In 1888 St. Mary's Cemetery opened, and mourners traveled by train from Chicago. Restaurants and taverns were created to provide meals for cemetery visitors. Within five years, the village had become a recreation center that attracted hundreds of Chicagoans to its picnic groves, beer gardens, and dance halls. The first of the village's 13 churches was established in 1893.

As a result of the financial panic of the 1890s, several surrounding communities voted to be annexed by Chicago. Realizing the current and future potential of its strong business district, and in order to avoid annexation during the serious economic crisis, The Village of Evergreen Park declared its independence and was incorporated on December 20, 1893.[5][4] Prior to its incorporation, the village was sustained by approximately 500 regional residents.[5] The final decision to incorporate as its own entity separate from the City of Chicago was made by 41 out of 50 residents that showed up to vote on the matter.[5] John M. Foley, a real estate and insurance agent, became the village's first mayor. On that day, the Village of Evergreen Park officially occupied an area of four square miles; it now covers an area of the same size.[5] In 1899, telephone service was introduced to the community. In 1910, gas and electric lines were extended into homes and street lights were erected. By 1920, most of the village's homes had indoor plumbing, although some residents still used a well located behind the village hall as their water source.[4]
