Basehor KS ultrasound technician with patientNow that you have decided to obtain an ultrasound technician degree near Basehor KS, the next step is to start the procedure of choosing a college. First, you must find the right program that will furnish the proper instruction to become a skilled professional. And given that some states do require that ultrasound techs be either licensed or certified, depending on your residence you may also need to be prepared to pass a licensing or certification exam. So it’s very important that you investigate each school so that you can evaluate and compare your options. But exactly where does one begin? A number of prospective students will start by looking for schools that are within travelling distance of their homes and then by comparing tuition. Certainly cost and location must be considered when making a decision, but there are additional significant factors as well. For instance, if the ultrasound technician schools have earned accreditation or if they offer internship programs. These and other qualifications will be covered more in depth later in this post. But to start with, let’s go over what a sonogram tech does and the credentials and online education programs that are available.

Ultrasound Tech Occupation Summary

Basehor KS sonographer testing pregnant womanThere are several acceptable titles for ultrasound techs (technicians). They are also referred to as sonogram techs, diagnostic medical sonographers (or just sonographers) and ultrasound technologists. Regardless of name, they all have the same basic job description, which is to carry out diagnostic ultrasound techniques on patients. While many practice as generalists there are specialties within the field, for example in cardiology and pediatrics. The majority work in Basehor KS clinics, hospitals, outpatient diagnostic imaging centers and even private practices. Typical daily work tasks of a sonogram technician can involve:

  • Keeping records of patient case histories and specifics of each procedure
  • Counseling patients by explaining the procedures and answering questions
  • Readying the ultrasound machines for use and then sterilizing and recalibrating them
  • Transferring patients to treatment rooms and ensuring their comfort
  • Utilizing equipment while limiting patient exposure to sound waves
  • Reviewing the results and identifying necessity for supplemental testing

Ultrasound techs must routinely gauge the performance and safety of their machines. They also are held to a high ethical standard and code of conduct as medical practitioners. In order to sustain that level of professionalism and stay up to date with medical knowledge, they are mandated to complete continuing education courses on an ongoing basis.

Sonogram Technician Degree Programs Offered

Basehor KS ultrasound tech testing pregnant womanSonogram technician students have the choice to earn either an Associate or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree will generally require about 18 months to 2 years to accomplish dependent on the program and class load. A Bachelor’s Degree will require more time at as long as 4 years to finish. Another option for individuals who have previously earned a college degree is a post graduate certificate program. If you have obtained a Bachelor’s Degree in any major or an Associate Degree in a related medical sector, you can enroll in a certificate program that will require only 12 to 18 months to finish. One thing to keep in mind is that almost all sonographer colleges do have a practical training element as a portion of their course of study. It often may be satisfied by participating in an internship program which numerous colleges sponsor with Basehor KS clinics and hospitals. After you have graduated from any of the certificate or degree programs, you will then have to fulfill the licensing or certification prerequisites in Kansas or whichever state you choose to work in.

Online Sonographer Schools

woman attending online sonography school in Basehor KSAs aforementioned, virtually all ultrasound technician colleges have a clinical requirement to their programs. So while you can obtain a certificate or degree online, a significant portion of the training will be either held in an on campus laboratory or at an authorized off-campus facility. Clinical training can usually be fulfilled by means of an internship at a local Basehor KS outpatient clinic, hospital or private practice. However the balance of the training and classes may be attended online in your Basehor home. This is especially convenient for those individuals that keep working while getting their degrees. In addition online colleges are frequently less costly than on-campus alternatives. Expenses for commuting and study materials can be reduced also. But just as with any sonographer college you are reviewing, confirm that the online program you ultimately pick is accredited. Among the most highly respected accrediting organizations is the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Accreditation is particularly crucial for licensing, certification and job placement (more on accreditation later). So if you are motivated enough to learn away from the classroom in the comfort of your own home, then an online degree may be the ideal choice for you.

Subjects to Ask Ultrasound Tech Colleges

Questions to ask Basehor KS ultrasound tech schoolsAfter you have decided on which certificate or degree that you would like to obtain, you can begin the process of evaluating and comparing ultrasound tech schools. You will first probably want to choose whether you would rather attend classes online or commute to a college campus in the Basehor KS area. Of course location will be critical if you select the latter, and the price of tuition no doubt will be an initial qualifier also. But there are additional factors that you should also take into account, for instance if the colleges are accredited and if they provide internships. So in order to complete your due diligence so that you can arrive at your final selection, following are some questions that you need ask each sonographer college prior to making a decision.

Are the Sonogram Tech Programs Accredited? A large number of ultrasound technician colleges have acquired some form of accreditation, whether regional or national. However, it’s still imperative to make sure that the program and school are accredited. One of the most highly regarded accrediting organizations in the field of sonography is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). Schools earning accreditation from the JRC-DMS have undergone a detailed assessment of their instructors and course materials. If the college is online it might also obtain accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which focuses on distance or online learning. All accrediting agencies should be acknowledged by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. Besides ensuring a quality education, accreditation will also assist in obtaining financial assistance and student loans, which are many times not accessible for non-accredited schools. Accreditation can also be a pre-requisite for licensing and certification as required. And a number of Basehor KS health facilities will only hire graduates of an accredited college for entry level jobs.

Are Internship Programs Sponsored? Inquire if the ultrasound technician schools you are evaluating have associations with Basehor KS clinics or hospitals for internship programs. Not only are internships an excellent way to obtain practical experience in a clinical setting, they are also a means to fulfill the practical training requirement for the majority of programs. As a supplemental benefit, they may help graduates and students establish professional connections in the Basehor medical community and assist with obtaining employment.

Is Job Placement Help provided? You will most likely want to hit the ground running after graduating, but finding that first job in a new profession can be difficult without assistance. Ask if the sonographer programs you are considering have job placement programs and what their placement rates are. Rapid and high placement rates are a good indication that the schools have substantial networks and great relationships with Kansas healthcare employers. It also substantiates that their graduates are highly regarded and sought after.

Where is the School Located? For a lot of students, the college they pick will have to be within driving distance of their Basehor KS home. Students who have decided to attend classes online obviously will not have to worry themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of local internships will be of importance. Something to bear in mind is that if you decide to enroll in a school that is out of state or even out of your local area, you might have to pay a higher tuition. State colleges often charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges typically charge a higher tuition for those students that live outside of their districts.

What are the Class Sizes ? Unless you are the type of student that prefers to sit far in the back of class or hide in the crowd, you will undoubtedly prefer a small class size. Small classes enable more individual participation and personalized instruction. Ask the schools you are researching what the typical student to teacher ratio is for their classes. If practical you may prefer to sit in on one or more classes before making your final determination. This will also give you an opportunity to talk with a few of the instructors and students to get their opinions regarding the sonogram tech program also.

Can the College Accommodate your Schedule? And finally you need to confirm that the ultrasound tech  school you finally choose can provide the class schedule you need. This is especially crucial if you choose to continue working while you attend school. If you need to schedule evening or weekend classes in the Basehor KS area, confirm that they are offered. If you can only attend part-time, check if that is an alternative and how many credit hours or courses you would have to enroll in. Also, learn what the procedure is for making up any classes that you may miss due to illness, work or family emergencies.

Enrolling in an Ultrasound Tech Program near Basehor KS?

If you are considering a Sonography Tech School near Basehor Kansas, following is some interesting background information about the location of your new school campus.

Basehor, Kansas

In exchange for extensive Delaware holdings in the state of Indiana, on September 24, 1829, the United States Government ceded a large tract of land to the Delaware Indians. Basehor is built on a small part of this tract. The Delawares held this land, or at least parts of it, until the 1860s. On July 4, 1866, the Secretary of the Interior of the United States was offered for sale what was left of the Delaware lands, then referred to as the Delaware Diminished Reserve, for not less than $2.50 per acre. The Leavenworth, Pawnee, and Western Railroad Company subsequently bought all of the remaining land on January 7, 1886.

The first individuals to own the land upon which Basehor now stands were Thomas Salem and Mary Z. Towne (though William Henery Lewis, who surveyed for the Railroad, bought an extensive plot on land to the northeast of Basehor around 1861 and homsteaded it right after the civil war) The couple bought it from the railroad in 1873 and mortgaged it to Ephraim Basehor the same year. On January 9, 1874, the Townes sold the 160 acres (0.65 km2) to Basehor.

Basehor was founded in 1889 by Reuben Basehor and his brother Ephraim. They both were of Pennsylvania Dutch descent and came to Kansas in 1854. After living in Lawrence for a time, Ephraim began working as a hired hand for an area farmer. He eventually bought the farm and other land holdings in the area.

Ephraim Basehor donated the land for the school house around 1900. The old grade school was located north of town and was originally called the Prairie Garden District #32. The first high school classes in the community met in 1905 above the Kemler-Hammond General Store. In 1906, a building was erected to house the high school and grade school. It was built for K–12 on the southeast corner of 155th Street and Leavenworth Road. The high school was upstairs, and K–8 was located in the three classrooms downstairs. In 1929, there were 5 graduates.
