They are also referred to as sonogram techs, diagnostic medical sonographers (or just sonographers) and ultrasound technologists. No matter what their title is, they all have the same primary job description, which is to perform diagnostic ultrasound testing on patients. Even though a number of techs work as generalists there are specializations within the field, for instance in cardiology and pediatrics. The majority work in Belen NM clinics, hospitals, private practices or outpatient diagnostic imaging centers. Standard daily work tasks of an ultrasound tech can consist of:

  • Maintaining records of patient case histories and specifics of each procedure
  • Counseling patients by explaining the procedures and answering questions
  • Preparing the ultrasound machines for usage and then cleaning and re-calibrating them
  • Moving patients to treatment rooms and ensuring their comfort
  • Utilizing equipment while minimizing patient exposure to sound waves
  • Reviewing the results and determining need for additional testing

Sonographers must frequently assess the safety and performance of their machines. They also are held to a high professional standard and code of conduct as medical practitioners. In order to maintain that level of professionalism and stay up to date with medical knowledge, they are mandated to enroll in continuing education programs on a regular basis.

An Associate Degree will usually involve about 18 months to 2 years to accomplish depending on the program and class load. A Bachelor’s Degree will require more time at as long as four years to complete. Another option for individuals who have previously received a college degree is a post graduate certificate program. If you have obtained a Bachelor’s Degree in any major or an Associate Degree in a related medical field, you can instead choose a certificate program that will require only 12 to 18 months to complete. One thing to bear in mind is that most ultrasound technician schools do have a clinical training element as part of their course of study. It often may be satisfied by participating in an internship program which numerous colleges set up with Belen NM clinics and hospitals. When you have graduated from any of the degree or certificate programs, you will then need to comply with the certification or licensing prerequisites in New Mexico or whatever state you choose to practice in.

Online Ultrasound Technician Degrees

So while you can earn a degree or certificate online, a substantial part of the training will be either carried out in an on campus laboratory or at an authorized off-campus facility. Clinical training can usually be fulfilled through an internship at a local Belen NM hospital, outpatient clinic or private practice. However the balance of the classes and training can be accessed online in your Belen home. This is especially convenient for those students that keep working while obtaining their degrees. In addition online colleges are often less costly than traditional alternatives. Expenditures for study materials and commuting can be lessened also. But similarly as with any sonography college you are looking at, make sure that the online program you choose is accredited. One of the most highly regarded accrediting agencies is the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Accreditation is especially significant for certification, licensing and finding employment (more on accreditation later). So if you are dedicated enough to attend classes outside of the classroom in the comfort of your own home, then an online school may be the ideal choice for you.

Questions to Ask Ultrasound Tech Programs

Questions to ask Belen NM ultrasound tech schoolsAs soon as you have decided on the type of certificate or degree that you would like to obtain, you can begin the process of assessing and comparing sonogram technician colleges. You may first want to choose whether you would rather attend classes online or commute to a college campus in the Belen NM area. Certainly location will be important if you select the latter, and the cost of tuition undoubtedly will be an initial qualifier also. But there are additional things that you should also take into consideration, such as if the schools are accredited and if they sponsor internship programs. Therefore in order to perform your due diligence so that you can make your ultimate selection, below are some questions that you may want to ask each sonographer school prior to making a decision.

Are the Sonogram Tech Schools Accredited? Most ultrasound technician schools have received some form of accreditation, whether regional or national. However, it’s still crucial to confirm that the school and program are accredited. One of the most highly respected accrediting agencies in the field of sonography is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). Schools obtaining accreditation from the JRC-DMS have undergone a detailed review of their teachers and educational materials. If the program is online it can also receive accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which focuses on online or distance education. All accrediting organizations should be acknowledged by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. In addition to ensuring a premium education, accreditation will also assist in acquiring financial aid and student loans, which are frequently not available for non-accredited programs. Accreditation can also be a pre-requisite for licensing and certification as required. And many Belen NM health facilities will only hire graduates of an accredited program for entry-level jobs.

Are Internships Provided? Inquire if the ultrasound tech programs you are interested in have associations with Belen NM clinics or hospitals for internship programs. Internships are not only a terrific means to receive hands on experience in a clinical environment, they are additionally a means to satisfy the practical training requirement for most programs. As a supplemental benefit, they can assist graduates and students form professional connections in the Belen healthcare community and assist with obtaining employment.

Is Job Placement Assistance offered? You will probably wish to hit the ground running after graduating, but finding that first job in a new field can be difficult without help. Find out if the ultrasound tech schools you are interviewing have job assistance programs and what their placement rates are. High and rapid placement rates are a good sign that the schools have substantial networks and good relationships with New Mexico healthcare employers. It also substantiates that their students are highly regarded and sought after.

Where is the College Located? For a lot of students, the school they pick will need to be within driving distance of their Belen NM home. Students who have decided to attend online classes naturally will not have to trouble themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of local internships will be of importance. Something to keep in mind is that if you decide to enroll in a program that is out of state or even out of your local area, you may have to pay a higher tuition. State colleges normally charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges typically charge a higher tuition for those students that live outside of their districts.

What are the Class Sizes ? Unless you are the type of student that likes to sit way in the back of class or get lost in the crowd, you will undoubtedly prefer a small class size. Smaller classes permit more individual participation and personalized instruction. Ask the schools you are looking at what the typical teacher to student ratio is for their classes. If practical you may prefer to monitor one or more classes before making your final decision. This will also give you a chance to speak with a few of the students and instructors to get their opinions regarding the sonogram tech program as well.

Does the School Accommodate your Schedule? And finally you need to confirm that the sonographer  school you ultimately choose can provide the class schedule you need. This is especially crucial if you choose to continue working while attending classes. If you need to schedule evening or weekend classes in the Belen NM area, make certain that they are available. If you can only enroll on a part-time basis, find out if that is an option and how many courses or credit hours you would need to enroll in. Also, learn what the protocol is for making up any classes that you might miss as a result of work, illness or family obligations.

Enrolling in an Ultrasound Tech Program near Belen NM?

If you are considering a Sonography Tech School near Belen New Mexico, following is some interesting background information about the location of your new school campus.

Belen, New Mexico

Belen is Spanish for Bethlehem but gained the nickname "The Hub City". The city is geographically near the center of New Mexico and has been a significant transportation hub for central New Mexico that includes access to rail, the interstate highway and air at Valencia County's only public airport.

Belen was founded in 1740 as Nuestra Señora de Belén by a group of Spanish colonists led by Diego Torres and Antonio Salazar, who received permission to settle the tract of land known as the Belen Grant the year before.[3] Recognizing the strategic significance of Belen, Spanish authorities established a fort in Belen to protect the settlements along the Rio Grande in 1760. By the 1790s, Belen had established a city center known as Plaza Vieja, or Old Town, and had grown from a paraje, or precinct, to a partido, or district, with a population of 1,695. By 1793, a Catholic church and parish was founded.[3]

By the middle of the 19th century, Belen had outgrown Old Town and was expanding into what became known as New Town. In 1853, the residents in each part of town disagreed over the construction of a new Catholic church, with residents of Old Town wanting the new church to remain there, while residents of New Town wanted it built in their part of town. Ultimately, the adobe church in Old Town was abandoned and a new church was built in New Town. In 1910, the last ruins of the former church were dynamited and the crushed adobe was used to pave New Town's main avenue — Becker Avenue.[3]

The residents of Valencia County spent nearly 30 years from 1846 to 1875 disputing where the county seat should be located. Valencia, north of Belen, was the county seat in 1846, followed by Peralta in 1847. Valencia reclaimed the county seat in 1849, only to lose it to Tome in 1852. Belen captured the county seat from Tome 20 years later, but lost it to Tome two short years later in 1874. Finally, in 1875, Los Lunas claimed the county seat and remains the county seat to this day.[3]
