Of course cost and location should be taken into account when arriving at a decision, but there are additional critical factors as well. But first, let’s review what an ultrasound tech does and the degrees and online training options that are available.

Sonographer Job Description

Marianna PA sonographer testing pregnant womanThere are more than one acceptable titles for ultrasound techs (technicians). They are also called sonogram techs, diagnostic medical sonographers (or just sonographers) and ultrasound technologists. No matter what their title is, they all have the same primary job description, which is to carry out diagnostic ultrasound procedures on patients. Even though a number of techs work as generalists there are specialties within the field, for instance in pediatrics and cardiology. Most practice in Marianna PA hospitals, clinics, private practices or outpatient diagnostic imaging centers. Standard daily work tasks of a sonogram tech may include:

  • Keeping records of patient medical histories and specifics of each procedure
  • Counseling patients by explaining the procedures and answering questions
  • Readying the ultrasound machines for use and then sterilizing and re-calibrating them
  • Moving patients to treatment rooms and making them comfortable
  • Operating equipment while limiting patient exposure to sound waves
  • Evaluating results and determining necessity for further testing

Sonographers must regularly evaluate the safety and performance of their machines. They also are held to a high professional standard and code of conduct as medical practitioners. So as to sustain that degree of professionalism and remain up to date with medical knowledge, they are mandated to enroll in continuing education training on an ongoing basis.

Sonogram Tech Degree Programs Available

Marianna PA ultrasound tech testing pregnant womanSonogram tech enrollees have the opportunity to acquire either an Associate or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree will typically take around 18 months to 2 years to complete dependent on the program and class load. A Bachelor’s Degree will require more time at up to 4 years to finish. Another option for those who have previously earned a college degree is a post graduate certificate program. If you have received a Bachelor’s Degree in any major or an Associate Degree in a related health sector, you can enroll in a certificate program that will take just 12 to 18 months to complete. Something to bear in mind is that most ultrasound technician programs do have a practical training component as part of their curriculum. It can often be fulfilled by participating in an internship program which numerous colleges organize with Marianna PA clinics and hospitals. Once you have graduated from one of the certificate or degree programs, you will then have to comply with the licensing or certification prerequisites in Pennsylvania or whichever state you elect to practice in.

Online Sonographer Degrees

woman attending online sonography school in Marianna PAAs aforementioned, nearly all ultrasound tech schools have a practical component to their programs. So while you can earn a degree or certificate online, a substantial part of the training will be either carried out in an on-campus lab or at an approved off-campus medical care provider. Practical training can typically be fulfilled by means of an internship at a local Marianna PA hospital, outpatient clinic or family practice. But the remainder of the classes and training can be accessed online in your Marianna home. This is especially convenient for those individuals that continue working while earning their degrees. In addition online programs are many times less costly than on-campus alternatives. Expenses for study materials and commuting may be decreased as well. But just as with any sonography college you are looking at, make sure that the online program you enroll in is accredited. One of the most highly regarded accrediting organizations is the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Accreditation is especially crucial for certification, licensing and job placement (more on accreditation later). So if you are dedicated enough to learn away from the classroom in the convenience of your own home, then online classes could be the right choice for you.

Topics to Ask Sonography Colleges

Questions to ask Marianna PA ultrasound tech schoolsAfter you have determined which degree or certificate that you would like to earn, you can initiate the process of reviewing and comparing sonogram tech schools. You may first want to decide whether you will attend classes online or travel to a college campus in the Marianna PA area. Clearly location will be significant if you decide on the latter, and the price of tuition no doubt will be an initial qualification also. But there are additional factors that you must also take into account, for example if the schools are accredited and if they sponsor internship programs. So in order to carry out your due diligence so that you can arrive at your ultimate selection, following are a few questions that you may want to ask each sonography college prior to making a decision.

Are the Sonogram Tech Programs Accredited? The majority of sonogram technician colleges have obtained some form of accreditation, whether national or regional. Even so, it’s still important to verify that the program and school are accredited. Among the most highly regarded accrediting organizations in the field of sonography is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). Programs receiving accreditation from the JRC-DMS have undergone a detailed assessment of their instructors and course materials. If the program is online it may also earn accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which targets online or distance learning. All accrediting organizations should be acknowledged by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. Along with ensuring a superior education, accreditation will also help in obtaining financial aid and student loans, which are often not offered for non-accredited schools. Accreditation can also be a pre-requisite for licensing and certification as required. And numerous Marianna PA health facilities will only hire a graduate of an accredited college for entry level positions.

Are Internship Programs Offered? Find out if the sonogram tech colleges you are reviewing have relationships with Marianna PA clinics or hospitals for internship programs. Internships are not only a terrific means to get practical experience in a clinical environment, they are additionally a means to fulfill the clinical training requirement for most programs. As a supplemental benefit, they can help students and graduates establish professional connections in the Marianna medical community and assist with job placement.

Is Job Placement Help offered? You will probably want to secure employment quickly after graduating, but finding that initial job in a new field can be difficult without help. Ask if the ultrasound tech schools you are interviewing have job assistance programs and what their success rates are. High and rapid placement rates are a good sign that the schools have substantial networks and great relationships with Pennsylvania healthcare employers. It also confirms that their graduates are highly regarded and sought after.

Where is the School Located? For a number of students, the school they choose will have to be within driving distance of their Marianna PA residence. Those who have decided to attend online classes naturally will not have to trouble themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of local internships will be of concern. Something to bear in mind is that if you choose to enroll in a college that is out of state or even out of your local area, you may be required to pay a higher tuition. State colleges generally charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges usually charge a higher tuition for those students that don’t reside within their districts.

How Large are the Classes ? Unless you are the type of person that likes to sit far in the back of the classroom or hide in the crowd, you will undoubtedly want a small class size. Smaller classes allow for more individual participation and one-on-one instruction. Ask the schools you are reviewing what the average teacher to student ratio is for their classes. If practical you may want to monitor one or more classes before making your ultimate decision. This will also give you a chance to speak with some of the instructors and students to get their perspectives regarding the ultrasound technician program also.

Can the School Accommodate your Schedule? And last you need to verify that the sonographer  college you finally pick can offer the class schedule you need. This is particularly essential if you opt to continue working while attending school. If you must schedule night or weekend classes in the Marianna PA area, check that they are offered. If you can only attend part-time, check if that is an alternative and how many courses or credit hours you would need to enroll in. Also, ask what the protocol is for making up any classes that you might miss because of illness, work or family obligations.

Marianna, Pennsylvania

Marianna was built as a mining town for the Pittsburg Buffalo Company in 1907 and was incorporated in 1910. At the time of its construction, the Marianna Mine was among the most modern and well equipped in the world. The town's brick homes were designed to offer indoor bathrooms, fenced yards and other amenities making living conditions very attractive for the time.

By 1914, the mine was sold to the Union Coal and Coke Company and later to Bethlehem Steel which continued to extract coal until 1988, when the main conveyor caught fire. The fire was extinguished, but the mine closed anyway.
