How to Pick the Right Ultrasound Technician Degree Program near Riverdale Maryland

Riverdale MD ultrasound technician with patientNow that you have decided to pursue an ultrasound technician degree near Riverdale MD, it’s time to start the procedure of selecting a college. To begin with, you need to find the ideal program that will furnish the necessary instruction to become a skilled professional. And since some states do require that sonographers be either certified or licensed, depending on your residence you may also need preparation to pass a certification or licensing exam. So it’s very important that you investigate each program in order to evaluate and compare your choices. But exactly where does one begin? A number of prospective students will start by searching for colleges that are within travelling distance of their residences and then by comparing tuition. Of course location and cost need to be considered when arriving at a decision, but there are additional important factors as well. For example, if the ultrasound technician schools are accredited or if they offer internship programs. These and other qualifiers will be addressed more in depth later in this post. But to start with, let’s review what an ultrasound tech does and the degrees and online education programs that are offered.

Sonographer Job Summary

Riverdale MD sonographer testing pregnant womanThere are several acceptable titles for ultrasound techs (technicians). They are also referred to as sonogram techs, diagnostic medical sonographers (or just sonographers) and ultrasound technologists. No matter what their title is, they all have the same basic job description, which is to implement diagnostic ultrasound techniques on patients. Although many practice as generalists there are specialties within the profession, for instance in cardiology and pediatrics. The majority work in Riverdale MD clinics, hospitals, outpatient diagnostic imaging centers and even private practices. Routine daily work duties of an ultrasound technician may include:

  • Preserving records of patient medical histories and details of each procedure
  • Counseling patients by explaining the procedures and answering questions
  • Prepping the ultrasound machines for testing and then cleaning and recalibrating them
  • Transferring patients to treatment rooms and ensuring their comfort
  • Utilizing equipment while limiting patient exposure to sound waves
  • Evaluating results and determining necessity for further testing

Ultrasound techs must regularly evaluate the performance and safety of their machines. They also must adhere to a high ethical standard and code of conduct as health practitioners. In order to sustain that degree of professionalism and stay current with medical knowledge, they are mandated to complete continuing education training on an ongoing basis.

Sonogram Tech Degree Programs Available

Riverdale MD ultrasound tech testing pregnant womanSonogram technician students have the opportunity to earn either an Associate or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree will typically require around 18 months to 2 years to finish based upon the course load and program. A Bachelor’s Degree will take longer at up to four years to complete. Another option for those who have already obtained a college degree is a post graduate certificate program. If you have earned a Bachelor’s Degree in any major or an Associate Degree in a relevant medical field, you can enroll in a certificate program that will require just 12 to 18 months to complete. One thing to bear in mind is that most sonographer schools do have a practical training component as a portion of their course of study. It often may be satisfied by entering into an internship program which numerous schools set up with Riverdale MD clinics and hospitals. After you have graduated from one of the degree or certificate programs, you will then need to satisfy the certification or licensing prerequisites in Maryland or whichever state you elect to practice in.

Online Ultrasound Technician Degrees

woman attending online sonography school in Riverdale MDAs previously mentioned, almost all ultrasound tech schools have a clinical requirement to their programs. So while you can earn a degree or certificate online, a significant portion of the training will be either held in an on campus laboratory or at an approved off-campus facility. Practical training can usually be fulfilled by means of an internship at a local Riverdale MD outpatient clinic, hospital or private practice. However the remainder of the training and classes can be attended online in your Riverdale home. This is especially beneficial for those individuals that continue working while getting their degrees. Plus online schools are frequently more affordable than on campus alternatives. Costs for commuting and study materials can be decreased also. But just as with every sonographer school you are reviewing, confirm that the online school you select is accredited. Among the most highly regarded accrediting organizations is the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Accreditation is particularly important for licensing, certification and finding employment (more on accreditation later). So if you are dedicated enough to learn outside of the classroom in the convenience of your own home, then an online degree could be the ideal option for you.

Points to Ask Ultrasound Technician Schools

Questions to ask Riverdale MD ultrasound tech schoolsNow that you have decided on the type of degree or certificate that you would like to earn, you can begin the process of assessing and comparing ultrasound technician schools. You may first want to choose whether you will attend classes online or travel to a college campus in the Riverdale MD area. Certainly location will be significant if you decide on the latter, and the cost of tuition no doubt will be an important qualification also. But there are additional variables that you must also take into account, for example if the schools are accredited and if they provide internships. Therefore in order to perform your due diligence so that you can arrive at your final selection, following are a few questions that you may want to ask each sonographer school prior to making a decision.

Are the Sonogram Tech Schools Accredited? Most ultrasound technician schools have acquired some form of accreditation, whether national or regional. Even so, it’s still important to confirm that the program and school are accredited. Among the most highly regarded accrediting agencies in the field of sonography is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). Schools receiving accreditation from the JRC-DMS have undergone a detailed examination of their instructors and course materials. If the program is online it might also receive accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which focuses on online or distance education. All accrediting agencies should be acknowledged by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. Besides ensuring a premium education, accreditation will also assist in getting financial aid and student loans, which are often not available for non-accredited schools. Accreditation can also be a pre-requisite for certification and licensing as required. And numerous Riverdale MD health facilities will only hire graduates of an accredited college for entry level positions.

Are Internship Programs Provided? Find out if the sonogram tech schools you are reviewing have partnerships with Riverdale MD clinics or hospitals for internship programs. Internships are not only a great means to get practical training in a clinical environment, they are also a way to fulfill the clinical training requirement for most programs. As an ancillary benefit, they may assist students and graduates form professional connections in the Riverdale healthcare community and assist with job placement.

Is Job Placement Help provided? You will undoubtedly wish to secure employment quickly after graduation, but finding that first job in a new profession can be difficult without support. Ask if the sonographer programs you are reviewing have job placement programs and what their success rates are. Rapid and high placement rates are a good indication that the schools have sizable networks and great relationships with Maryland healthcare employers. It also confirms that their graduates are well regarded and sought after.

Where is the College Located? For a number of students, the school they decide on will need to be within driving distance of their Riverdale MD home. Students who have decided to attend classes online naturally will not have to trouble themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of area internships will be of concern. Something to keep in mind is that if you decide to enroll in a program that is out of state or perhaps out of your local area, you may have to pay a higher tuition. State colleges commonly charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges often charge a higher tuition for those students that don’t reside within their districts.

How Big are the Classes ? Unless you are the kind of student that likes to sit far in the back of the classroom or get lost in the crowd, you will likely want a small class size. Small classes allow for more individual participation and one-on-one instruction. Ask the schools you are considering what the typical teacher to student ratio is for their classrooms. If practical you may prefer to sit in on one or more classes before making your ultimate decision. This will also give you an opportunity to speak with some of the instructors and students to get their perspectives regarding the sonogram tech program as well.

Does the School Accommodate your Schedule? And finally you must confirm that the ultrasound tech  school you finally pick can offer the class schedule you need. This is especially important if you opt to continue working while you attend classes. If you need to schedule evening or weekend classes in the Riverdale MD area, make sure that they are available. If you can only attend part-time, verify if that is an alternative and how many credit hours or courses you would have to enroll in. Also, learn what the protocol is for making up any classes that you may miss due to illness, work or family obligations.

Enrolling in an Ultrasound Tech Program near Riverdale MD?

If you are considering a Sonography Tech School near Riverdale Maryland, following is some interesting background information about the location of your new school campus.

Riverdale Park, Maryland

Riverdale Park, formerly known and often referred to as Riverdale, Maryland is a semi-urban town in Prince George's County, Maryland, United States, a suburb in the Washington D.C. metropolitan area.[5] The population was 6,956 as of 2010.[6]

Riverdale Park and the neighboring community of West Riverdale developed in the late 19th century as streetcar suburbs in central Prince George’s County. The town is located approximately seven miles northeast of downtown Washington, D.C., and is bounded to the north by East-West Highway. The area is also bisected by the heavily traveled Baltimore Avenue (U.S. Route 1). The city of College Park is located to the north, the town of University Park to the east across Baltimore Avenue, and Hyattsville is located to the south and southwest.

The area was first developed in 1801 when a Belgian aristocrat, Henri Joseph Stier, purchased 800 acres situated between two tributaries of the Anacostia River, known as the Paint and Northwest branches. Stier and his family moved to the United States several years earlier to escape the French Revolution (1788–1789). Upon purchase, he named his holdings Riversdale, and began constructing his residence that same year. The mansion was modeled after the Stier family’s Belgian home, Chateau du Mick, and when completed in 1807, the building stood as a two-story stuccoed-brick dwelling in the style of late Georgian architecture.

Just two years after purchasing the property, in 1803, the political tension that had caused Stier to flee his native country subsided, and he and his wife, Marie Louise, returned to Belgium. Riversdale was given to their daughter, Rosalie, who had married George Calvert, the grandson of Charles Calvert, 5th Baron Baltimore, in 1799. After Rosalie Stier Calvert died in 1821 and George Calvert in 1838, their son, Charles Benedict Calvert, took over the plantation. Charles Calvert was a renowned agriculturist and helped establish the Maryland Agricultural College, now the University of Maryland at College Park. In May 1853, Calvert announced he would donate land for an agricultural college.[7] In 1861, Calvert was elected to the United States Congress and fought for the establishment of the United States Department of Agriculture. During his life, Charles Calvert conducted a variety of agricultural experiments at Riversdale, and expanded his family's original holdings to 2,200 acres. Calvert died in 1864; however, the property remained in the ownership of the Calvert family for another twenty years.
