Gasconade MO sonographer testing pregnant womanThere are several professional titles for ultrasound techs (technicians). They are also referred to as sonogram techs, diagnostic medical sonographers (or just sonographers) and ultrasound technologists. Regardless of name, they all have the same primary job function, which is to implement diagnostic ultrasound testing on patients. While a number of techs practice as generalists there are specializations within the profession, for example in pediatrics and cardiology. Most work in Gasconade MO clinics, hospitals, outpatient diagnostic imaging centers and even private practices. Standard daily job functions of a sonogram technician can consist of:

  • Maintaining records of patient medical histories and details of each procedure
  • Counseling patients by explaining the procedures and answering questions
  • Readying the ultrasound machines for testing and then cleaning and re-calibrating them
  • Transferring patients to treatment rooms and ensuring their comfort
  • Utilizing equipment while limiting patient exposure to sound waves
  • Assessing results and identifying need for further testing

Ultrasound techs must frequently evaluate the performance and safety of their machines. They also must adhere to a high ethical standard and code of conduct as health practitioners. So as to sustain that degree of professionalism and remain current with medical knowledge, they are required to enroll in continuing education training on a regular basis.

Gasconade MO ultrasound tech testing pregnant womanSonogram tech enrollees have the opportunity to earn either an Associate Degree or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree will usually require around 18 months to 2 years to finish based upon the program and class load. A Bachelor’s Degree will take longer at as long as 4 years to complete. Another option for individuals who have previously earned a college degree is a post graduate certificate program. If you have earned a Bachelor’s Degree in any major or an Associate Degree in a relevant medical field, you can instead choose a certificate program that will take only 12 to 18 months to complete. Something to keep in mind is that almost all ultrasound technician programs do have a practical training component as a portion of their course of study. It often may be satisfied by taking part in an internship program which many colleges sponsor with Gasconade MO clinics and hospitals. When you have graduated from any of the certificate or degree programs, you will then need to satisfy the licensing or certification requirements in Missouri or whatever state you decide to practice in.

Online Sonographer Colleges

woman attending online sonography school in Gasconade MOAs earlier discussed, almost all ultrasound technician colleges have a practical component to their programs. So while you can receive a certificate or degree online, a substantial part of the training will be either carried out in an on-campus laboratory or at a sponsored off-campus facility. Practical training can usually be satisfied through an internship at a local Gasconade MO outpatient clinic, hospital or private practice. But the remainder of the training and classes may be accessed online in your Gasconade home. This is especially convenient for those students that continue working while obtaining their degrees. Plus online programs are many times less expensive than traditional options. Costs for commuting and study materials may be reduced also. But similarly as with every ultrasound tech college you are considering, confirm that the online school you select is accredited. Among the most highly respected accrediting agencies is the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Accreditation is particularly crucial for certification, licensing and finding employment (more on accreditation later). So if you are dedicated enough to attend classes outside of the classroom in the comfort of your own home, then an online degree could be the right choice for you.

Points to Ask Sonogram Tech Colleges

Questions to ask Gasconade MO ultrasound tech schoolsWhen you have decided on which certificate or degree that you would like to obtain, you can start the process of evaluating and comparing sonogram technician colleges. You may first want to decide whether you would rather attend classes online or commute to a college campus in the Gasconade MO area. Obviously location will be critical if you select the latter, and the price of tuition no doubt will be an important qualifier also. But there are additional factors that you should also take into consideration, for instance if the colleges are accredited and if they sponsor internships. So in order to carry out your due diligence so that you can arrive at your ultimate selection, following are several questions that you need ask each sonography program before deciding.

Are the Ultrasound Tech Colleges Accredited? The majority of sonogram technician colleges have acquired some type of accreditation, whether national or regional. Even so, it’s still important to verify that the school and program are accredited. Among the most highly respected accrediting agencies in the field of sonography is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). Programs receiving accreditation from the JRC-DMS have gone through an extensive assessment of their instructors and course materials. If the college is online it might also obtain accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which targets online or distance education. All accrediting agencies should be recognized by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. Besides guaranteeing a superior education, accreditation will also assist in acquiring financial assistance and student loans, which are frequently not available for non-accredited schools. Accreditation can also be a pre-requisite for licensing and certification as required. And numerous Gasconade MO employers will only hire a graduate of an accredited college for entry-level openings.

Are Internship Programs Sponsored? Find out if the ultrasound technician colleges you are evaluating have associations with Gasconade MO clinics or hospitals for internship programs. Not only are internships an excellent manner to get hands on training in a clinical environment, they are also a means to fulfill the practical training requirement for most programs. As an ancillary benefit, they may assist students and graduates form professional relationships in the Gasconade health care community and help with obtaining employment.

Is Job Placement Help provided? You will most likely want to secure employment quickly after graduating, but getting that initial job in a new field can be challenging without assistance. Ask if the ultrasound tech schools you are interviewing have job placement programs and what their placement rates are. Rapid and high placement rates are a good indication that the schools have substantial networks and great relationships with Missouri healthcare employers. It also confirms that their students are well regarded and sought after.

Where is the College Located? For many students, the school they decide on will have to be within driving distance of their Gasconade MO residence. Individuals who have opted to attend online classes naturally will not have to worry themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of local internships will be of concern. One thing to consider is that if you choose to enroll in a school that is out of state or perhaps out of your local area, you might need to pay a higher tuition. State colleges commonly charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges generally charge a higher tuition to those students that live outside of their districts.

What are the Class Sizes ? Unless you are the sort of student that likes to sit far in the back of class or get lost in the crowd, you will probably prefer a small class size. Small classes enable more individual participation and one-on-one instruction. Ask the colleges you are researching what the average teacher to student ratio is for their classrooms. If practical you may prefer to monitor one or more classes before making your ultimate decision. This will also give you a chance to talk with a few of the students and instructors to get their opinions regarding the sonogram technician program as well.

Does the School Accommodate your Schedule? And finally you must verify that the ultrasound tech  program you finally choose can provide the class schedule you need. This is particularly important if you opt to continue working while attending school. If you need to schedule evening or weekend classes in the Gasconade MO area, make certain that they are offered. If you can only enroll on a part-time basis, check if that is an option and how many credit hours or courses you would have to carry. Also, ask what the procedure is for making up any classes that you might miss because of illness, work or family obligations.

Enrolling in an Ultrasound Tech Program near Gasconade MO?

If you are considering a Sonography Tech School near Gasconade Missouri, following is some interesting background information about the location of your new school campus.

Gasconade Bridge train disaster

The Gasconade Bridge train disaster was a rail accident in Gasconade, Missouri on November 1, 1855. The Gasconade bridge collapsed under the locomotive O'Sullivan while crossing. Thirty-one people were killed in the first major deadly bridge collapse in American history. More recent sources put the number of deaths at 43.[1][2][3]

At the time of the disaster, the Pacific Railroad was being built west from St. Louis, which was to be the starting point for the first transcontinental railroad, an effort led by Senator Thomas Hart Benton of Missouri.[4] Construction had begun on the railroad on July 4, 1851, and two years later, it had reached Kirkwood; by 1855, the railroad was completed to Jefferson City. The railroad bridge at Gasconade, a 760-foot wooden structure spanning the Gasconade River, was unfinished, but track was supported by temporary trestle.[4]

On November 1, a day of heavy rain, the inaugural train carrying some 600 invited visitors and dignitaries, including Henry Chouteau, of the founding family of St. Louis, set out from downtown at 9 a.m. led by the locomotive Missouri. Thomas O'Sullivan was chief engineer on the train.[4] O'Sullivan considered stopping to check the Gasconade Bridge but because the train was behind schedule he opted not to stop. He felt reassured of its stability, as a gravel-hauling train had traveled over it the day before. A single locomotive preceded the train across the bridge as a final check for any problems.[5]

As the train started over the bridge, the span between the east bank and the first pier collapsed. The steam engine and seven of the cars fell through the wooden timbers and the others rolled down the 36 foot embankment into the riverbed (but fortunately not in the water). Only one car remained on the tracks.[6] The engine tipped over backwards and landed on the first passenger car, which carried many dignitaries. Thirty-one people were killed (later revised to 43 killed), including Chouteau, O'Sullivan, and many other prominent St. Louis citizens.[7] Newspapers named 136 as injured but estimated up to 200 more unnamed. (In this age of primitive medicine, germ theory and sterile wound dressing were not yet known. Simple wounds could be fatal due to infections. Twenty-nine people were killed outright, but hundreds were injured. The true number of fatalities is unknown.)
