To begin with, you have to find the ideal program that will furnish the necessary training to become a qualified professional. And because a number of states do mandate that ultrasound techs be either licensed or certified, depending on where you will practice you may also need to be prepared to pass a certification or licensing examination. So it’s extremely important that you investigate each program in order to assess and compare your options. But exactly where does one start? Many potential students will start by looking for colleges that are within driving distance of their residences and then by comparing tuition. Certainly location and cost must be considered when arriving at a decision, but there are other critical factors as well. For example, if the ultrasound technician schools are accredited or if they provide internship programs. These and additional qualifications will be discussed more in depth later in this article. But first, let’s discuss what an ultrasound tech does and the degrees and online education programs that are available.

Ultrasound Tech Occupation Summary

Ripley WV sonographer testing pregnant womanThere are more than one acceptable titles for ultrasound techs (technicians). They are also called ultrasound technologists, sonogram techs, and diagnostic medical sonographers (or just sonographers). Regardless of name, they all have the same primary job description, which is to carry out diagnostic ultrasound procedures on patients. Although many work as generalists there are specializations within the field, for instance in pediatrics and cardiology. The majority practice in Ripley WV hospitals, clinics, private practices or outpatient diagnostic imaging centers. Common daily job duties of a sonogram tech can consist of:

  • Preserving records of patient case histories and specifics of each procedure
  • Counseling patients by explaining the procedures and answering questions
  • Prepping the ultrasound machines for testing and then cleaning and re-calibrating them
  • Transferring patients to treatment rooms and ensuring their comfort
  • Using equipment while minimizing patient exposure to sound waves
  • Assessing results and determining necessity for further testing

Sonographers must frequently gauge the performance and safety of their equipment. They also are held to a high professional standard and code of conduct as health practitioners. So as to sustain that level of professionalism and stay up to date with medical knowledge, they are required to enroll in continuing education programs on an ongoing basis.

Sonogram Tech Degree Programs Offered

Ripley WV ultrasound tech testing pregnant womanSonogram tech enrollees have the opportunity to earn either an Associate Degree or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree will typically take about 18 months to 2 years to accomplish dependent on the program and class load. A Bachelor’s Degree will take longer at as long as 4 years to complete. Another alternative for those who have already received a college degree is a post graduate certificate program. If you have received a Bachelor’s Degree in any major or an Associate Degree in a related medical field, you can instead choose a certificate program that will take just 12 to 18 months to finish. One thing to keep in mind is that almost all ultrasound technician programs do have a clinical training element as part of their curriculum. It often may be satisfied by taking part in an internship program which many colleges organize with Ripley WV hospitals and clinics. After you have graduated from any of the certificate or degree programs, you will then have to comply with the licensing or certification prerequisites in West Virginia or whatever state you choose to practice in.

Sonographer Online Colleges

woman attending online sonography school in Ripley WVAs aforementioned, virtually all ultrasound technician colleges have a practical component to their programs. So while you can earn a degree or certificate online, a substantial portion of the training will be either carried out in an on-campus laboratory or at an approved off campus facility. Practical training can typically be fulfilled through an internship at a local Ripley WV hospital, outpatient clinic or family practice. But the rest of the classes and training can be attended online in your Ripley home. This is particularly beneficial for those students that continue working while earning their degrees. Plus online colleges are often less expensive than traditional options. Costs for commuting and study materials can be reduced as well. But just as with every ultrasound tech school you are considering, check that the online school you choose is accredited. Among the most highly respected accrediting organizations is the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Accreditation is particularly significant for licensing, certification and job placement (more on accreditation later). So if you are dedicated enough to learn away from the classroom in the convenience of your own home, then an online degree may be the ideal option for you.

Topics to Ask Ultrasound Tech Programs

Questions to ask Ripley WV ultrasound tech schoolsWhen you have decided on which certificate or degree that you would like to earn, you can initiate the procedure of evaluating and comparing sonogram technician schools. You may first want to decide whether you will access classes online or travel to a school campus in the Ripley WV area. Obviously location will be significant if you select the latter, and the cost of tuition no doubt will be an important qualifier as well. But there are additional variables that you must also take into consideration, for instance if the schools are accredited and if they offer internship programs. Therefore in order to perform your due diligence so that you can make your final selection, below are several questions that you may want to ask each ultrasound tech college before deciding.

Are the Sonogram Tech Colleges Accredited? Most ultrasound technician schools have obtained some type of accreditation, whether regional or national. Even so, it’s still imperative to make sure that the program and school are accredited. One of the most highly regarded accrediting organizations in the field of sonography is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). Programs earning accreditation from the JRC-DMS have undergone a rigorous review of their teachers and educational materials. If the college is online it may also earn accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which focuses on online or distance learning. All accrediting organizations should be acknowledged by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. Along with ensuring a superior education, accreditation will also help in getting financial assistance and student loans, which are often not accessible for non-accredited schools. Accreditation may also be a pre-requisite for certification and licensing as required. And many Ripley WV employers will only hire graduates of an accredited college for entry level positions.

Are Internship Programs Provided? Inquire if the ultrasound technician colleges you are evaluating have relationships with Ripley WV hospitals or clinics for internship programs. Not only are internships an excellent means to receive practical experience in a clinical setting, they are also a way to satisfy the practical training requirement for the majority of programs. As a supplemental benefit, they may assist students and graduates form professional relationships in the Ripley health care community and assist with job placement.

Is Job Placement Assistance offered? You will most likely want to secure employment quickly after graduation, but finding that first job in a new field can be challenging without support. Find out if the sonographer schools you are reviewing have job assistance programs and what their placement rates are. Rapid and high placement rates are a good sign that the schools have substantial networks and great relationships with West Virginia healthcare employers. It also substantiates that their graduates are highly regarded and in demand.

Where is the College Located? For a lot of students, the college they pick will have to be within travelling distance of their Ripley WV home. Individuals who have decided to attend online classes obviously will not have to concern themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of local internships will be of concern. One thing to bear in mind is that if you decide to enroll in a school that is out of state or even out of your local area, you may have to pay a higher tuition. State colleges usually charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges frequently charge a higher tuition for those students that live outside of their districts.

How Large are the Classes ? Unless you are the type of student that likes to sit way in the back of class or hide in the crowd, you will undoubtedly want a smaller class size. Small classes allow for more individual participation and one-on-one instruction. Ask the colleges you are reviewing what the average teacher to student ratio is for their classrooms. If practical you may prefer to monitor one or more classes before making your ultimate determination. This will also give you a chance to speak with several of the instructors and students to get their perspectives regarding the sonogram technician program also.

Can the Program Accommodate your Schedule? And last you need to verify that the ultrasound tech  program you ultimately choose can offer the class schedule you need. This is particularly essential if you decide to continue working while you attend classes. If you must schedule evening or weekend classes in the Ripley WV area, confirm that they are offered. If you can only enroll on a part-time basis, find out if that is an option and how many courses or credit hours you would need to enroll in. Also, learn what the protocol is for making up any classes that you might miss because of illness, work or family emergencies.

Enrolling in an Ultrasound Tech Program near Ripley WV?

If you are considering a Sonography Tech School near Ripley West Virginia, following is some interesting background information about the location of your new school campus.

Ripley, West Virginia

Ripley was originally owned and settled by William, John, and Lewis Rodgers. They received a grant of 400 acres (1.6 km2) in 1768 where "Sycamore Creek joins Big Mill Creek" (the current site of Ripley). The land was later sold to Jacob (and Ann) Starcher, most probably in 1803. Jacob Starcher erected a grist mill in 1824 and laid out the town in 1830, naming it in honor of Harry Ripley, a young minister who was to be married, but drowned in Big Mill Creek, about one and a half miles north of the town, shortly before the ceremony took place.[7][8]

When Jackson County was formed in 1831, the residents of the county could not decide where to locate the county seat. The people who lived along the Ohio River near the Ravenswood settlement favored that location. The people who lived farther inland objected. The Virginia General Assembly appointed an independent commission to make the final decision which selected Ripley. In 1832, the Starchers donated 8 acres (32,000 m2) of land to the county, 2 acres (8,100 m2) for the location of the county courthouse and jail, and six for the general use of the new county (a public school and a cemetery were later located on the land). The town was chartered by the Virginia General Assembly in 1832.[7][8]

The last public hanging in West Virginia took place in Ripley in 1897, when John Morgan was hanged for murder; the spectacle prompted the West Virginia Legislature to ban public executions soon after.[10][11]

In 1990, the Ravenswood Aluminum Corporation locked out its 1,700 workers, most living in Ravenswood, at least a third had lived in Ripley at the time. The workers went on strike and eventually were let back in 1993.[citation needed]
